Alex Turner
Vocals
Alex Turner is the lead vocalist, guitarist, and principal songwriter of the Arctic Monkeys. The only child of two teachers, Alex was raised in the Sheffield suburb of High Green. He has also recorded with his side-project The Last Shadow Puppets and as a solo artist for the Submarine movie soundtrack. Alex got his first guitar when he was 15, and started to make his own music from that time.
Alex and Matt Helders were friends since they were seven, and were neighbours and went to the same primary school. They played music together throughout school.
Jamie Cook
Guitar
Jamie Cook was born in 1985, and is a guitarist and songwriter for the Arctic Monkeys. He is best known as the rhythm guitarist and was founding member of the band. He has recorded five studio albums with the Arctic Monkeys. Jamie was Alex Turner's next door neighboor, and is known for being extremely outspoken. He has been described as "the bullishly confident blue-collar lad" of the group.
At the start of the band's career, Cook would join Matt Helders in backing vocals for some songs, but has gradually moved away from singing duties.
Nick O'Malley
Bass
Nick O'Malley is the bass guitarist and backing vocalist of the Arctic Monkeys. Nick picked up the bass guitar when he was 16, after trying to play drums and guitar. He wasn't originally a part of the band, but joined after Andy Nicholson, the original Arctic Monkeys bass player left. Nick knew of the band before joining them. Before he joinged the band, Nick used to work at the supermarket chain ASDA.
Nick's first appearance with the band came on 25 May, when the band played a secret gig at the "Old Blue Last" pub in east London.
Matt Helders
Drums
Matt Helders is the drummer for Arctic Monkeys. Matt picked up drums as it was the only instrument left when the Arctic Monkeys was formed. From Matt, "When we started the band none of us played anything. We just put it together. They all had guitars and I bought a drum kit after a bit." Out of the group, he is the most comprehensive backing vocalist, and has contributed to many of the songs in this manner.
Helders dated model Breana McDow from 2011, the they became engaged in 2013 and married in 2016. In 2015, the couple had a daughter.
